Sri Lanka is so diverse and there are endless opportunities to go on adventurous and thrilling treks and hikes. As a trekker, you should head to its Central Highlands. A typical trek can take you through pristine and lush farms of spice, tea and paddy fields. You will go through thick rainforests, across hills, along streams and waterfalls. Head north and you will find yourself close to the cultural sites. The North western part of the country offers endless plains and green backwoods. A trek through Kandy means getting the chance to see some of the most important Buddhist temples in the country. This includes the Gadaladeniya and Embakke temples.
Close to Matale and Kandy is the ‘Knuckles Mountain Range’. As the name suggests, it looks like a human knuckle. There are beautiful, scenic treks and hikes across this range that is spread across more than 150 km.
If you want to witness the biggest rice fields in the country, you should be in Hanguranketha. Here you will come to see the most spectacular thing – tree-top huts. The farmers use these elevated homes to guard over their crops from elephants. You can find a river (BelihulOya), a reservoir (Randenigala), a magnificent waterfall, and also amazing birdlife while trekking these fields.
The BelihulOya river creates a wet region along a drier area. This is the greatest biodiversity site in the country. Your trekking trails will take you through forests, hills and lush green fields in this area.
Other stunning trails for trekking and hiking for nature lovers include the Ritigala Hills, the Pidurangala Rock, and the Mihintale Hills. You can also visit some major cultural spots here.
